Polar Bear Tracker

IMPACT AREA: Climate Action
COLLABORATOR: WWF

As climate change progresses, the evolving behavioural and migration patterns of polar bears has made it difficult to reliably track their locations. WWF and IDEO reached out to MistyWest to design an Argos based tracking device to help solve this problem.

Wearable Particle Sensor

IMPACT AREA: Sustainable Cities and Communities
COLLABORATOR: TZOA

TZOA wanted to develop a compact, multi-sensor device capable of monitoring indoor air quality and provide a platform for data aggregation, all while keeping the product at a consumer price of less than $200 a unit. Hey, we said we love a hard problem!

Pre-Eclampsia Diagnostic Device

IMPACT AREA: Good Health & Well Being
COLLABORATOR: Lions Gate Technology

MistyWest was contracted to design, fabricate, and assemble an interface for a multi-sensor medical diagnostic platform intended to help identify pre-eclampsia in pregnant women in remote areas. 800 units were designed and assembled within 6 weeks, including design of a PCB to translate the audio signal to a digital input suitable for android tablets, and an enclosure suited for rapid low-volume manufacture. This device has been used in a broad clinical trial overseas, and several cases of Pre-Eclampsia have been identified and averted using field interventions.

Gateway Enclosure

IMPACT AREA: People, Planet
COLLABORATOR: Neurio

MistyWest worked closely with Neurio to create an enclosure for their existing Gateway energy monitor’s electronics circuit board, with a focus on industrial design and cosmetic aesthetics, influenced by themes centred around the target audience of the device. Mechanical design followed with provisions for LED indicators and connector placement, structure, and internal mounting features. 10 sets of enclosures were delivered upon completion, which were assembled into fully functional demonstration devices and showcased as offerings to Neurio’s potential customers.

n Fresh Controlled Outdoor Signage

IMPACT AREA: Sustainable Cities and Communities
COLLABORATOR: Amazon

MistyWest was subcontracted to develop a prototype for AmazonFresh’s new rapid grocery pickup service. This entailed designing a unit according to the client’s existing Industrial Design Volume, in addition to being resistant to the variables of outdoor climate, and meeting requirements of UL certification.

ble Sleep Monitoring Device

IMPACT AREA: People, Planet
COLLABORATOR: Fatigue Science

Fatigue Science’s sleep monitoring wristband required a design update. MistyWest was brought on to provide certification, design documents, update the firmware to conduct validation testing, and design a custom test jig to conduct high volume testing. Our team conducted PCB miniaturization, followed by delivery of 2000 assembled PCBs, and made improvements to battery life and reliability, of which now exceeds one month. Ultimately, MistyWest delivered completely redesigned hardware and firmware on the wearable device. Fatigue Science is now shipping thousands of units each month, and some of their most notable customers include the Toronto Raptors and the Chicago Cubs’ championship team.
